russian strike Kryvyi Rih. war in ukraine. russian crimes. UN monitoring mission
A russian strike on the city of Kryvyi Rih on 4 April killed 21 people, including 9 children (aged 3-17), and injured more than 60 others. The epicentre of the strike was a playground in a residential area. russia hit Kryvyi Rih with a cluster ballistic missile to increase the number of civilian casualties. But as the kremlin always does, it covered up the attack with a disinformation campaign. russian media wrote that the strike was on a place where Ukrainian military commanders were gathered.
In fact, the russian Ministry of Defence presented a forum of beauty industry representatives as a meeting of ‘Ukrainian army commanders’ in Kryvyi Rih. During the shelling, a restaurant nearby was hosting the Golden Snitch Beauty Business Forum, organised by the Kryvyi Rih Business Union. They were also celebrating a birthday. The forum was announced publicly on 24 February. Most of the guests had left the restaurant a few minutes before the attack, but two participants were still hit.
The strike hit a civilian object - a playground, a residential building and an institution where civilians, including children, were present. russian media claimed that there was a ‘meeting of military commanders and instructors’ at the site, but there is no evidence to support this. A little later, propagandists tried to accuse Ukraine of staging it. But the UN confirmed the horrific act of aggression by russia.
"This horror is unimaginable - 9 children were killed, most of them while playing in a park when a military munition exploded with shrapnel right above them. A single blast ended 18 lives on a warm Friday evening in Kryvyi Rih as families relaxed near a playground, restaurant and residential buildings," said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.
On 5 April, a UN monitoring mission visited the site of the russian attack in Kryvyi Rih, recorded the extent of the destruction and identified the names of the children killed. Turk noted that shortly before the attack, a restaurant in the city had hosted a beauty industry forum attended by dozens of women and men. Thus, there was no military presence in the area of the tragedy: https://news.un.org/en/story/2025/04/1161946
In total, over the past week, russia has fired more than 1,460 guided aerial bombs, nearly 670 attack drones and more than 30 missiles of various types at Ukraine. Should we believe in russia's intentions to end the war? Absolutely not.
UPDATE: A new terrible war crime was committed by putin's army a week before Easter
On 13 April, the day when all Orthodox Christians around the world celebrate Palm Sunday, russia launched two missile strikes in the middle of the day on the centre of Sumy, which is always very crowded. The ballistic missiles injured more than 100 people and killed 35 (including 2 children). Unfortunately, Ukraine still does not have the proper missile defence that the United States could provide, but the Trump administration does not consider this a priority.
And, of course, russian media launched 4 false versions at once to justify the attack on Sumy.
‘They hit an industrial facility involved in the production of weapons’.
‘A strike on a cluster of military personnel’.
‘It was Ukrainian air defence that shot down missiles over people's heads’.
‘It is beneficial for Zelenskyy, because such PR helps him get money from the West’.
In fact, talking about benefits in the context of mass civilian deaths is immoral, but typical of russians. This is a typical russian attempt to justify terror. russian propaganda launches several contradictory versions at once to confuse and divert attention from the main point - russia has committed another war crime. But none of them has anything to do with reality. Moreover, one of the missiles had a cluster munition, which means hundreds of small metal parts that fly apart when exploding and maximise the scale of casualties and damage. This indicates a clear calculation by the kremlin terrorists. Evil must be punished, otherwise it will move on. We call on the whole world to act decisively.
Last summer, the russian army fired several missiles at a children's hospital in Kyiv, after which it launched several fakes about the incident.
