russian propagandists began spreading a conspiracy theory claiming that Great Britain is transferring $280 million worth of enriched uranium to Kyiv, which the Ukrainian side could allegedly use to create a "dirty bomb" or launch a nuclear strike against russia. In reality, this is yet another piece of kremlin disinformation.

The delivery in question is low-enriched uranium for nuclear power plants—a fuel fundamentally unsuitable for either nuclear or "dirty" weapons. On June 15, 2026, the British government officially announced the allocation of £210 million (around $280 million) through UK Export Finance: these funds guarantee a loan that will allow the British company Urenco to supply enriched uranium to the Ukrainian state operator Energoatom to power Ukrainian nuclear power plants over the next two years. The agreement was concluded at a meeting between Prime Minister Keir Starmer and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in London and announced at the G7 summit.
This is not the first contract of its kind: Urenco and Energoatom have been cooperating since 2009, and in 2023 they already signed a supply agreement extending through 2035 with an option to extend until 2043.
The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine and the state enterprise Energoatom have repeatedly emphasized that cooperation with Western partners, including Great Britain and the US (Westinghouse), is aimed exclusively at achieving complete energy independence from russia. Following the start of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine completely rejected Russian nuclear fuel. All Ukrainian nuclear power plants operate under the continuous monitoring of IAEA inspectors, who regularly confirm that all nuclear materials in the country are used exclusively for peaceful purposes, and that there are no signs of the development of undeclared weapons or "dirty bombs" at Ukrainian facilities.
