Brookings Institute: Russian propaganda affects US elections through TikTok

In the run-up to the US presidential election, a number of Russia-related accounts are appearing on TikTok, spreading disinformation in English and Spanish. This is stated in a new report by the Brookings Institute.

Krym.Realii journalists report that Russian propaganda is trying to reach a younger audience through TikTok. The publication notes that the audience reach of propaganda resources is higher on Telegram and the X social network, but user engagement (likes, views, reactions) is much higher on TikTok, about 20 times more than on X.
In the report of the researchers of the institute (https://www.brookings.edu/articles/tracing-the-rise-of-russian-state-media-on-tiktok/), it is emphasized that the main task of the political posts, which are probably published by Russian accounts, is to cause discord in society. This is a classic method of Russian propaganda. In particular, in 2016, Russia-related publications did not always support Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and seek to weaken the position of Democrat Hillary Clinton. The main goal was to undermine trust in the election institution, the report emphasizes.
Currently, political posts are spreading information about the age of US President Joe Biden, protests against Washington's support for Israel, posts by former Fox News host Tucker Carlson about Russia and US policy towards it. Such topics can find a response among the young audience of the United States, according to the authors of the document.
A representative of TikTok, commenting on the publication of the Brookings Institution in a conversation with Time magazine, said that the company had previously removed accounts through which influence campaigns were carried out, including 13 groups that worked from Russia. TikTok also flags state media accounts and will soon extend this practice to other resources that report global events outside their country.
So, as you can see, Russian propaganda and Russian fakes cover the whole world. This is not only about Ukraine (although it is the primary goal for the Russians), but also about the entire democratic world. Be alert! Share our resource with your friends. Stop the spread of Russian fakes!
