Top 5 lies told by Putin during his ‘direct line’ broadcast

At the end of the year, the russian dictator traditionally answers questions from loyal journalists and controlled ‘public figures’ live on air. His statements are then spread by russian propaganda far beyond russia's borders. Once again, vladimir putin lied to both his own people and the international community watching him. We have highlighted the key fakes.

Incidentally, during a live broadcast with the kremlin dictator, sergey zenin, a propagandist for the russia 1 television channel, was introduced as Steve Rosenberg, a correspondent for the British broadcaster BBC. The moderators asked how many times he had been to such meetings with putin. The man replied, ‘More than once.’ Rosenberg himself expressed surprise on Twitter at the appearance of his ‘double’ on the live broadcast: https://x.com/BBCSteveR/status/2002804837486850215
Lie 1: ‘russia is advancing in all directions in Ukraine and has taken the cities of Kupiansk and Vovchansk in the last two months.’In reality: No reliable sources — neither ISW, nor DeepState, nor the Ukrainian military — confirm the capture of Kupiansk or Vovchansk. Fighting in these areas continues, the front line is changing locally, and the kremlin's statements are an attempt to pass off tactical clashes as a ‘strategic offensive.’ Moreover, the russians are doing very badly in Kupiansk, where their troops are surrounded.
Lie 2: ‘russia is ready not to attack Ukraine on election day, when it comes.’In reality: This is not a ‘gesture of goodwill,’ but an attempt to impose the topic of elections on Ukraine during the war and legitimise interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state. russia systematically attacks civilian infrastructure regardless of dates, events or statements — and has never kept such promises.
Lie 3: ‘russia is ready for peace and has always been willing to compromise.’In reality: By ‘peace,’ putin means the fulfilment of all of russia's ultimatums: Ukraine's renunciation of its territories, army, and sovereign choice. This is not a negotiating position, but a dictate. moscow has not offered any real compromises at any meeting devoted to ‘peace agreements.’
Lie 4: ‘russia does not plan to attack Europe if it is respected.’In reality: The threat to Europe is already being realised — through hybrid attacks, sabotage, cyberattacks, election interference and energy blackmail. The formula ‘we will not attack if we are not offended’ is classic blackmail language, not a guarantee of security.
Lie 5: ‘Everything is under control in the economy, the state does not put pressure on the Central Bank.’In reality: Increased VAT, record debts, expensive loans and manual ‘coordination’ of central bank decisions are signs of a deep structural crisis in the russian economy. The reduction of the key rate right during the ‘direct line’ looked like a political gesture rather than independent monetary policy.
Last time, putin lied about other topics, but this lie is still often mentioned in the kremlin-loyal media and by bloggers.
vladimir putin gave another batch of lies and accused the USA and NATO of undermining international security and once again declared them the culprits of the war in Ukraine: "Is it fair to go to our borders, i.e. Ukraine, and start there build, not prepare, but just build military bases? Is it fair to violate the obligations assumed within the framework of the OSCE, when all the countries of the West have signed a document according to which there can be no security of one party when the security of another is violated?"
Truth: despite Ukraine's desire to join NATO, there is still no clear answer from the alliance, other than verbal support. At the Bucharest NATO Summit in 2008, Ukraine was denied a membership action plan, limiting itself to a non-binding declaration. Only after the start of the full-scale war did a certain shift occur: the alliance announced that a membership action plan was not needed for Ukraine to join. But, as US representative to NATO Julianne Smith recently confirmed, "to date, the alliance has not reached the point where it is ready to offer membership or an invitation to Ukraine."
As for obligations within the framework of the OSCE, putin obviously has in mind the wording of the Istanbul document of 1999:
"Each participating state has the same right to security. We reaffirm the inherent right of each participating state to freely choose or change the means of ensuring its security, including alliance treaties, as they evolve. Every state has the right to neutrality. Each State Party shall respect the rights of all others in this regard. They will not strengthen their security at the expense of the security of other states. Within the framework of the OSCE, no state, group of states or organization can be given the primary responsibility for maintaining peace and stability in the OSCE region or consider any part of the OSCE region as its sphere of influence."
In fact, something directly opposite to putin's words is said here. According to this wording, Ukraine has every right to join any interstate association, in particular, obviously, NATO. russia cannot prevent this, as it is already an obvious claim to the sphere of influence.
russian mass media have been writing fiction about the construction of NATO bases in Ukraine since 2022 (to somehow justify their aggression). Here is one of the quotes in the RIA Novosti publication from volodymyr kononov, the former deputy head of the Starobil district prosecutor's office of the Luhansk region, who fled to russia in 2022: "Ukraine is going to build military bases together with NATO in Severdonetsk. No one saw what was happening there, what they were doing there. But, according to information, a NATO base was being built."
In other words, the traitor kononov said that he did not see anything, he was not allowed to build a military facility, but, according to some information of unknown origin, a NATO base was being built there. kononov's statement, as well as putin's statement now, are based on a change of concepts: a base according to NATO standards is not the same as a NATO base at all. Ukraine only considered NATO standards as a model for the reform of its armed forces.
In 2020-2021, according to NATO standards, two new bases were built in Severodonetsk and Mariupol; this is exactly what the then Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Andriy Zahorodniuk, reported. A naval base was also built in Berdyansk, again, according to NATO standards. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine was responsible for the construction of the bases, there was no foreign funding. They were intended exclusively for the Armed Forces. Placement of foreign military bases on the territory of Ukraine is expressly prohibited by Article 17 of the Constitution.
Another empty accusation of the main criminal of our time is not supported by any evidence (otherwise there were enough facts in many world media, especially since journalistic activity is not hindered in Ukraine). They are designed for their own population, for supporters of the kremlin and, probably, for naive fools who listen to his every word.
