Many Latin Americans continue to follow the Kremlin narrative: Washington is to blame for everything because it forced Russia to attack Ukraine. But according to many polls, Latin America wants to live like in the US. Many there sympathize with the American way of life. However, Russia is trying to polarize the societies of different countries on this issue. How?
According to scientist (expert in this region) Volodymyr Ruvinskyi, putin is convinced that Latin America is a "near abroad" for the USA. Therefore, it is as important to the United States as the former republics of the Soviet Union are to russia. And that is why the kremlin, strengthening its presence in Latin America, wants to disrupt the interests of the United States in this region.
To do this, the russians expanded their propaganda with the help of the media "RT" or "Sputnik Mundo" (Actualidad RT and Sputnik Espanol), which increasingly shape the geopolitical worldview of Latin Americans. "For Moscow, its Spanish-language TV channels have the same priority as arms factories," Ruvinsky states.
His thesis is supported by Douglas Fara, a senior researcher at the American Center for Strategic Studies of the National Defense University: "Information campaigns of influence in Latin America were and remain for russia a part of its hybrid war doctrine."
A number of russian narratives were noted during media monitoring in 2023. For example, the spread of messages regarding blackmail with the use of nuclear weapons by russia in the event of escalation has so far been noted. Calls for peace talks have also not lost relevance on the agenda of online media in Argentina and Brazil. Also, regional mass media often justify the russian Federation's war against Ukraine: "The russian military in Ukraine protects the interests of the russian nation, its future and its children."
It is important that Ukraine and the leaders of Western countries seek and continue dialogue with the leaders of Latin American countries, because the rule of international law is sacred, and the issue of security is equally important for everyone, on every continent.
