kremlin propagandists have begun spreading a false claim that President Zelenskyy is calling for a 30-day ceasefire with russia due to ‘enormous losses of the Ukrainian army’. The russians refer to the American think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which allegedly published a video with this news.

After this information began to spread, StopFake decided to check whether the analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) had really made such conclusions. As it turned out, the propaganda made up the story again.
ISW publishes daily reports on the russian-Ukrainian war on its website. After reviewing the materials published in recent weeks, no information was found to suggest that it was ‘colossal losses’ that prompted Zelenskyy to propose a ceasefire. While ISW reports mention the possibility of a 30-day ceasefire, they are more of a summary of statements by Ukrainian, russian, American and European politicians than an analysis of the reasons for the proposal (e.g., in the reports of 28 April or 9 May).
Accordingly, there is no video with such information on the ISW's official website, YouTube, or its account on X. Obviously, russian propaganda has once again used the name of a reputable organisation to create another fake about Ukraine. As for the ‘losses of the Ukrainian army’, there have been no significant changes on the frontline in the first 5 months of 2025.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces are holding their ground and consistently killing at least 1,000 russians per day. In addition, in the first four months of this year, Ukrainians have struck many painful blows deep into russia's territory, targeting ammunition depots, logistics centres, command posts, and military factories.
Recently, russian propagandists used the symbolism of the International Committee of the Red Cross in publications claiming that the Ukrainian army's losses allegedly amounted to ‘over a million people.’ But in reality, the Red Cross has once again become a propaganda tool for russian murderers.
At the same time, Ukraine does not hide the catastrophic nature of the russian war and acknowledges that it is suffering irreparable losses due to russia's bloody aggression, both among the military and the civilian population. In an interview with NBC published on 16 February 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that more than 46,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in battle since 2022, and another 380,000 Ukrainians had been wounded in battle. However, russian military losses are much higher. As of 16 June 2025, russia had already lost 1,005,000 soldiers, according to the General Staff of Ukraine (https://www.facebook.com/GeneralStaff.ua). This estimate is generally consistent with the estimates of Western intelligence services.
It is worth recalling that on 28 April, russian leader putin announced a three-day ‘ceasefire’ to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the victory in World War II. Then Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a counter-proposal: a ceasefire lasting at least 30 days. According to him, there was no point in limiting efforts to achieve real peace to a short-term period. However, putin rejected this proposal.
Nevertheless, it is Ukraine that insists on a diplomatic settlement of the conflict, as both sides are very exhausted. But the kremlin, as always, disregards its people, sending thousands of new ‘contract soldiers’ to certain death, so the brutal military operations continue.
At the same time, russia calls ‘elimination of the root causes of the conflict’ as one of the conditions for a ceasefire, which is essentially a delay, a distraction to continue the war. Among the ‘root causes’, putin mentions Ukraine's refusal to join NATO, a significant reduction in the Ukrainian armed forces, recognition of the occupied territories as russian, protection of the rights of the russian-speaking population, and new elections in Ukraine. Or in other words, capitulation. Let's be honest: who is putin and who gives him the right to decide what Ukraine should be like and how Ukrainians should live in their country?
On 19 May, Trump and putin had another phone call. Ukraine and the EU insist that russia accept the unconditional ceasefire that Trump himself proposed. But the result of this conversation is that Trump has again taken a loyal stance to putin. Now the new US leader agrees to consider the kremlin's CONDITIONS for a ceasefire.
Sadly, it is the weakness of the new US administration that allows the kremlin to make new plans for its military operations. Until the US shows strength (increased military support for Ukraine and tougher sanctions for russia and its trading partners), this conflict will continue. It is unfortunate. But each of our voices is important to ensure that politicians make the right decisions to end wars and terror.
Misinformation is spreading online that Ukraine has allegedly refused to accept 6,000 bodies of deceased Ukrainian soldiers as part of the negotiation process with the russian Federation. It is claimed that the Ukrainian government does not want to pay compensation to the relatives of the deceased, the total amount of which allegedly exceeds $2.1 billion.
Indeed, on 2 June, the second round of negotiations between Ukraine and russia took place in Istanbul, mediated by Turkey. Following the meeting, the parties agreed on the exchange of prisoners of war and the repatriation of the bodies of deceased soldiers in a ‘6,000 for 6,000’ format. However, on 7 June, the head of the russian negotiating team, vladimir medinsky, stated that Ukraine had allegedly refused to accept the first batch of the deceased. These reports are published exclusively in the pro-russian segment of the network and have no factual basis. The Ukrainian side refuted the disinformation. They note that this process is very delicate and requires verification of data on fallen soldiers, as well as careful preparation. In particular, President Zelensky said the following in an interview: "It is very important to check everything, and all of our people must be brought back. But we have already had cases where the Russians handed over the bodies of their own soldiers, substituting them for Ukrainians".
However, the russian fake news factory reinforced its disinformation campaign with yet another series of fake international media publications. On 9 June, propaganda Telegram channels shared a screenshot of an alleged Politico publication with the headline: ‘Russia tentatively has at least 40,000 more bodies of Ukrainian soldiers prepared to attack the Ukrainian economy.’ However, there are no materials with such a headline or content on Politico's official websites. No credible media outlet has reported that russia has ‘at least 40,000 bodies of dead Ukrainian soldiers.’ This is a typical example of fake propaganda.
In addition, some propaganda resources have spread another fake screenshot with non-existent news under the headline ‘The Office of the President of Ukraine has issued an order to obtain a waiver of compensation from the families of 6,000 dead AFU soldiers.’ This time, they used The Wall Street Journal. Of course, there are no publications with a similar headline and content on the WSJ website.

Such fakes are aimed at discrediting the Ukrainian leadership, undermining trust in the authorities and sowing panic among the population. Secondly, such messages manipulate the extremely sensitive issue of the return of the bodies of the deceased in order to cause people pain, anger and despair. Thirdly, fake publications with forged logos of Western media create the illusion of international condemnation or exposure, reinforcing the effect of mistrust. All this is part of a systematic information war waged by russia in an attempt to demoralise Ukrainian society and cause internal division.
