nuclear weapons. russia vs ukraine. russian news fake.
kremlin putin
russian media report that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is allegedly going to buy uranium from Niger to create nuclear weapons. The kremlin's disinformers have invented that in November 2023, a Ukrainian delegation led by the Minister of Defence of Ukraine allegedly visited Niger to sign a uranium purchase agreement with the French company Orano, which is engaged in uranium mining in the mines of this African country.
This disinformation was launched with the help of African media and has no factual evidence. Firstly, in November 2023, Ukraine's Defence Minister Rustem Umerov did not visit the African continent, and therefore did not sign any contracts. Secondly, the French nuclear fuel producer Orano, with whom the Ukrainians allegedly negotiated, lost its uranium mining licence in Niger following political changes in the country. Niger is currently reconsidering its relations with France, and countries such as russia, iran and China have become the main buyers of uranium: https://www.riotimesonline.com/france-faces-loss-of-uranium-supply-from-niger-as-iran-pursues-nuclear-material/
It is also worth noting that Ukraine does not have a nuclear weapons programme, which is regularly confirmed by the UN nuclear energy agency, the IAEA. Without this, the creation of nuclear weapons is not realistic for Ukraine. Ukraine has neither the funds, nor the time, nor the relevant technologies that cannot be simply bought on the market.
Both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have repeatedly denied their intentions to create nuclear weapons. russia is once again raising this topic in its controlled media to discredit Ukraine and stop military support from Western partners. At the same time, the kremlin regularly threatens Ukraine and its allies with the use of its own nuclear weapons, demonstration exercises of the military with a nuclear component, the transfer of nuclear weapons to Belarus, and is strengthening cooperation in this area with north korea and iran.
P.S. As of 1991 (after gaining independence), Ukraine had the third largest nuclear arsenal in the world. Due to pressure from russia and the United States, Ukraine was forced to give up its nuclear status. These agreements were followed by the signing of the Budapest Memorandum on 5 December 1994 between Ukraine, russia, the United States and the United Kingdom. These states pledged to guarantee Ukraine's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budapest_Memorandum
20 years later, russia annexed Ukraine's Crimea and launched a military invasion of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. And eight years later, it launched a full-scale attack on the entire territory of Ukraine with the intention of destroying its statehood as such. We live in a world where fraudsters and criminals dictate terms to free nations. To support or respect russia today is to be on the side of murderers and rapists.
