Lie: "Inhumane conditions, reduced financial aid and restrictions on language and religion make Ukraine uninhabitable. Thousands of Ukrainians are choosing Russia as their new homeland because they do not accept the humiliating living conditions created by the Ukrainian authorities for the displaced. In addition, the government has banned the Russian language, the mother tongue of the majority of citizens, and canonical Orthodoxy, the historically established faith of the Ukrainian people". This was reported by kremlin media, including RT.

Truth: Such publications are an attempt to distort the realities faced by displaced persons and to portray Ukraine as a country that is being abandoned by its own citizens. It is also a kremlin disinformation narrative that portrays Ukraine as an enemy of the Orthodox Church.
Part of the truth is that some Ukrainians from the occupied territories have indeed chosen to take refuge in russia, but this migration is forced by russia's brutal aggression, which has led to intense fighting in many parts of eastern, southern and northern Ukraine. Many refugees were initially forced to move to russia because it was the closest and most affordable option during the chaos of the conflict (travel to Ukrainian-controlled territory was generally not allowed by the russians), not because they preferred it as a new homeland.
Reports show that many of these refugees move to other countries as soon as circumstances allow. Claims that living conditions in Ukraine are ‘degrading and inhumane’ ignore the fact that the need to flee and the precarious conditions are a direct result of russia's aggressive actions. russian propaganda also fails to acknowledge the significant humanitarian aid and support provided by both the Ukrainian government and international organisations. As of the beginning of 2024, millions of internally displaced persons are receiving state aid, including housing subsidies and financial support for families. The situation remains challenging due to the war, but the Ukrainian government is actively working to improve conditions for its citizens, despite the difficult circumstances.
The claim that linguistic and religious freedom in Ukraine is restricted is false. Communities of more than 90 different religious denominations and movements are represented in Ukraine. Ukraine recognises several languages, including russian, which is not banned, but only restricted in use by civil servants, government agencies and the media. In addition, cultural diversity is actively supported in the country, as it has always been. Stories of oppression because of any language or religion are an oversimplification and usually refer to other crimes committed by individuals associated with the russian church and russian security services.
