Pro-russian media outlets have started spreading false information that Israeli police have arrested a group of Ukrainians for planning a terrorist attack. According to the authors of the fake, they planned to release tear gas during the Holy Fire ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem on 19 April. This fake was attributed to The Times of Israel. 

"The Israeli police arrested a group of terrorists consisting of 13 Ukrainians who planned to release tear gas during the Holy Fire ceremony. According to the perpetrators, the purpose of this information terrorist action, codenamed ‘Mourning Ukraine’ in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, was to express support for Ukraine," russian propagandists said.

StopFake has verified the authenticity of this ‘news’ - it is fake. The official website of the Israeli police regularly publishes news and reports on arrests, operations and other law enforcement activities. In 2025, none of them mentions ‘terrorists’ preparing to attack with tear gas during the Holy Fire lighting ceremony. There is also no information about the arrest of 12 “Ukrainians”. No reputable Ukrainian or Israeli media outlet has reported on this incident either.

As for the source of the ‘news’ - allegedly a video from the Times of Israel - it is another russian fake. There is no such video on the official website of the Israeli publication, on the YouTube channel, in the X, Facebook and Instagram accounts. A search for the name of the operation ‘Lament for Ukraine’ mentioned in the ‘news’ also yielded no results.

StopFake also contacted the Embassy of Ukraine in Israel and the Embassy of Israel in Ukraine to verify the information. The journalists did not receive any confirmation.
