Fake: Ukraine is bankrupt

A lie: the law signed by the President of Ukraine Zelenskyi on the suspension of foreign debt payments indicates that Ukraine is bankrupt. The pro-russian media reports this with reference to businessman Kim Dotcom.

Truth: Kim Dotcom is known for his scandalous statements about Ukraine, which are often consistent with russian propaganda. Back in May 2022, Dotcom stated that "more than 14,000 ethnic russians of Donbas were killed by US-trained Ukrainian fighters" - and this, in his opinion, became the reason for the full-scale invasion.
In July 2024, Dotcom tweeted that Western leaders, whom Biden allegedly dragged into a war with the russian Federation, should "accept defeat and make peace with russia." He also does not hesitate to repost the tweets of Dmitriy Medvedev (former president and prime minister of russia), Viktor Orbán (prime minister of Hungary, who works closely with the kremlin) and Western pro-russian agitators like Glenn Diesen.
The statement about the "bankruptcy of Ukraine" is manipulation. In fact, on July 31, Zelenskyi signed a law that allows the government to suspend payments on the foreign public debt if necessary until October 1, 2024. This permission is needed by the government in case a formal agreement on debt restructuring is not reached by August 10.

This is part of the government's routine work, which russian propagandists and their associates are trying to pass off as evidence of the "financial collapse of Ukraine." Back in 2022, Ukraine's Western partners and main creditors agreed to restructure foreign debts and postpone their payment due to the devastating war started by russia.

Kim Dotcom is a German-Finnish entrepreneur, the former owner of the world's largest file sharing site Megaupload, in January 2013 he became the founder of the Mega file sharing site. Arrested on 19 January 2012 in New Zealand at the request of the FBI, but released on bail on 22 February 2012. The US authorities have accused Dotcom of extortion, money laundering and massive copyright violations.
