This issue came to a head in February 2014, when russia invaded and illegally annexed Ukraine's Crimean peninsula and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. There is no evidence that any ethnic citizens, including ethnic russians or russian-speaking Ukrainians, face persecution by the Ukrainian authorities or restrictions on their rights. At the same time, russia is silent about the ways in which it is ‘liberating’ people from the ‘Kyiv Nazis’ - simply by dropping bombs on their homes. Those who survive are ‘welcome to russia’. And if the russians encounter resistance and condemnation among local residents, they immediately send these people to prison, where they are subjected to brutal torture and ‘re-education’. In fact, it is the most russian-speaking regions of Ukraine that suffer the most from missile attacks by the russian army, which destroys entire ‘russian-speaking’ cities. They dream of returning to Ukraine, but they have no right to vote - only the right to be tortured and harassed.
