IAEA Director General. russian propaganda. Rafael Grossi. russian military
russian telegram channels and social media users have spread information that IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has allegedly accused the Ukrainian Armed Forces of a drone attack on an agency vehicle. "The Armed Forces of Ukraine launched a kamikaze drone attack on the car of IAEA experts who were heading to the Zaporizhzhya NPP despite the ceasefire", quoted by Ukraina.ru.
Fact: this information is false. On Tuesday, 10 December, the IAEA actually announced that a kamikaze drone had shot down and "seriously damaged" an agency vehicle. In a press release, the agency said the incident occurred about 8 kilometres from the front line, on Ukrainian-controlled territory. The vehicle was travelling in a convoy to a transshipment point in the combat zone to meet an IAEA team that had been staying at the agency's Zaporizhzhia headquarters for the past month. Grossi himself did not blame either Ukraine or russia for the attack, maintaining a neutral position.
"As IAEA Director General, I strongly condemn this attack on IAEA staff. Fortunately, there were no casualties and our teams are safe. The rotation is complete. I said earlier that it is unacceptable to attack a nuclear power plant. It is also absolutely unacceptable to attack those who care about nuclear safety and the safety of these plants", was all the IAEA Director General said about the incident.
There were no other statements in the media (other than russian ones) in which Grossi accused any party of launching the drone. russian propaganda limited itself to attributing the right words to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. This is another attempt to discredit Ukraine and the Ukrainian armed forces.
As for the drone attack itself, there is undeniable evidence that it was an attack from the occupied territory controlled by the russians. All this time, Ukrainians have been complying with all agreements with the IAEA and have been facilitating the agency's work to ensure safety at nuclear facilities. Instead, such methods of attacking civilians are a characteristic feature of the russian military. More than a thousand such cases have already been recorded.
