The kremlin media have started spreading fake information that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has allegedly threatened Donald Trump, who won the US presidential election, to expel the Americans from the North Atlantic Alliance. Such "news" spreads a fictitious quote from Rutte: "If Trump surrenders Ukraine to putin, I will personally expel the United States from the alliance."

StopFake journalists found that this information is not true. The only "evidence" the propagandists have in this news is a printed quote attributed to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. But the fake news sources do not specify when and where he said this. There are also no links to videos or reputable publications that reported this statement by Rutte.
If you look at all the statements of the Secretary General about Trump, it becomes clear that the above "quote" is actually a propagandist invention. In the context of Donald Trump's victory in the US election, Mark Rutte spoke out only a few times. First, on 6 November, he congratulated Trump on his victory on social media platform X and stressed that his leadership would be key for the Alliance: "I have just congratulated Donald Trump on his election as President of the United States. His leadership will once again be key to keeping the Alliance strong. I look forward to working with him again to promote peace through strength within NATO."

Later, on 7 November, Rutte commented on Trump's victory and its implications for Ukraine before the start of the European Political Community summit in Budapest: "I think what it means for all of us is that we will have a president who has experience, who knows exactly what he wants. He will push us all to spend more on defence. And he's right about that. We got to 2 per cent (of GDP defence spending) largely because of his efforts. And he will be doing a lot more in the future."
The above statements by NATO Secretary General Rutte clearly contrast with the quote published by russian disinformers. It is also worth adding that the fake quote by Rutte was not published in any foreign reputable media. It is clearly beneficial for the kremlin to quarrel between NATO and the United States, and thus weaken both sides. This is especially true when the headquarters of the newly elected American president calls for the country's withdrawal from the alliance. russia is happy to take advantage of the weakness of its opponents to cause even more trouble.
