Erdogan said. Turkey army. nuclear bomb. russian fake
A russian-language video is circulating online in which the Turkish president allegedly announces plans to build nuclear weapons. The authors of the fake claim that the sensational statement sparked heated debate in the media and that the world's attention is now focused on Ankara and Turkey's next moves on the world stage. In reality, this quote from the Turkish president is completely fabricated.
Surprisingly, despite the fact that Erdogan's statement, according to russian propaganda, ‘sparked heated debate in the global media,’ we were unable to find any mention of such a statement by the Turkish president in any reputable international media outlet. The fact is that Erdogan spoke about nuclear weapons back in 2019, more than six years ago. At that time, the Turkish president was speaking in Sivas in front of supporters of the ruling party and was outraged that states that already have nuclear weapons are actively pressuring others to prevent them from acquiring military nuclear technologies. Here is the full quote from the Turkish president's speech: "All developed countries today have nuclear weapons. During one of my trips abroad, I was openly told about plans to build up a nuclear arsenal. That's what others are thinking. And at the same time, they do not forget to warn Ankara about the inadmissibility of creating nuclear weapons".
So, at that time, Erdogan did not promise to create a nuclear arsenal in Turkey, and he certainly did not say, ’If we do not have nuclear weapons, we will be wiped off the face of the earth." We remind you that Turkey ratified the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1979 and has had a valid safeguards agreement with the IAEA since 1981.
More recently, Erdogan has spoken about nuclear weapons mainly in the context of Israel. In June 2025, during telephone conversations with US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Pezeshkian, Erdogan clearly stated Turkey's position that "negotiations on nuclear weapons are the only way to resolve the conflict between Israel and Iran". He also regularly calls for international inspection of Israel's nuclear arsenal ‘before it is too late.’
