NATO Secretary General. Mark Rutte. war in Ukraine. russian news

Pro-russian media and social media users are spreading disinformation that NATO and EU member states support the continuation of hostilities in Ukraine until 2030. They refer to a distorted version of recent statements by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, which boil down to the idea that ‘the alliance has openly ordered Ukraine to fight until 2030.’

"NATO openly states that a ceasefire in Ukraine is not in their interests, as Russia is producing large quantities of weapons – let it use them in Ukraine, and Europe will thus have time to rearm", according to a quote from russian media.
This disinformation was created based on a speech by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on 9 June 2025 at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London. In his speech, Rutte addressed the broader security threats facing NATO member states against the backdrop of ongoing russian aggression against Ukraine. He highlighted the growing alliances between authoritarian regimes in north Korea, iran, russia and China.
Mark Rutte warned that russia's military machine is accelerating, not slowing down, as moscow increases weapons production with the help of Chinese technology. The NATO secretary general also said that russia has no plans to stop its military aggression, describing President vladimir putin as a ‘clear expansionist.’ The kremlin currently lacks the capacity to attack NATO, but Rutte warned that continued inaction by the allies could allow the russians to develop such capabilities within a few years. Military cooperation between russia, north Korea, iran and China looks like a coalition preparing for a potential large-scale conflict.
The economies of NATO member states are 25 times larger than russia's. But russia produces four times more ammunition than the entire NATO at the moment... So there are clear gaps. If things remain as they are, in 3-5 years they may be able to attack NATO," Rutte warned: https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/opinions_235867.htm?selectedLocale=en
But pro-russian media outlets are misquoting Mark Rutte as if he predicted that the war in Ukraine would last until 2030. In fact, the NATO Secretary General made no predictions about the duration of russian aggression against Ukraine.
"President putin is not acting like someone who is interested in peace. russia continues to attack civilians in Ukraine, day after day. This is violence for violence's sake, pure terror. We fully support President Trump's efforts to stop the bloodshed. The people of Ukraine deserve a just and lasting peace. NATO's practical and political support for Ukraine continues. Our long-term support is not about prolonging the war. It is about helping Ukraine defend itself today and preventing any future aggression," Rutte believes.
Thus, kremlin propaganda continues to manipulate the narrative of peace talks and ceasefires, while simultaneously obstructing any meaningful path to a genuine resolution. In reality, moscow is actively blocking concrete efforts by the US and the EU to end the conflict and establish peace.
Fake: NATO is preparing a provocation against Russia in the Kaliningrad region.
russian propagandists are quoting the head of the German Council for the Constitution and Sovereignty, Ralf Niemeyer, as saying this. In fact, Ralf Niemeyer has no political weight in Germany. He has repeatedly appeared on kremlin-controlled media and is associated with pro-russian and radical movements, including the Reichsbürger group, whose members have even plotted a coup d'état.
The Insider's fact-checkers have identified what kremlin propaganda calls "NATO provocations" as GPS problems in the Baltic region, which have been recorded by independent sources: Polish researchers, Finnair, the US-based Stable Navigation and Timing Foundation, the Institute for the Study of War, and OSINT experts. NATO members themselves suffer from these failures. For example, in 2024, Finnair even temporarily cancelled flights from Helsinki to Tartu. The British Air Force reported 142 instances of GPS loss during flights over Eastern Europe from January to April 2024.

By the way, researchers from the Maritime University in Gdynia and the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) have established, using ground-based monitoring stations and air traffic data, that it is russia that jams GPS over the Baltic Sea from the Kaliningrad region. The interference is coming, in particular, from the area near the antenna installations in the village of Okunevo and the Baltiysk city area, where russian electronic warfare units are stationed.

Fake: Increased defence spending will lead to the collapse of NATO
This lie is a direct response to NATO's decision to increase defence spending to 5% of GDP by 2035. No serious analysis has suggested that this could lead to the "economic collapse" of the alliance, as russian propaganda claims. The European Union has established several mechanisms to facilitate this spending, including a €150 billion fund for joint procurement. In all NATO countries, military spending is a proportion of education and health budgets. And it will remain so in most cases.
The decision to increase defence spending was made unanimously by all NATO members in response to russia's armed aggression against Ukraine, which has been going on for three years now, and in response to the kremlin's unwillingness to agree to an unconditional ceasefire and a peaceful diplomatic settlement of the conflict, which was proposed by the United States and supported by Ukraine and the EU.

Similar narratives are being promoted by the russians in relation to individual countries.

Fake: Poland's military spending is destroying the country's social sector.
russian media: "Poland plans to build tanks instead of pensions, missiles instead of schools. This is a road to nowhere. Economic disaster is on the horizon".
russians repeatedly present Poland as an aggressive anti-russian NATO "outpost" that allegedly poses a security threat to russia. In reality, the Polish authorities are forced to create a long-term policy of strengthening defence capabilities. At the same time, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has repeatedly stressed that social spending remains a priority. Record funds are being allocated to healthcare, education and family support programmes. But Poland is clearly aware of russia as a security threat due to its aggressive actions in Ukraine and across Eastern Europe.
