russian war crimes. The Ukrainian army. russian prisoners. ukraine war
This was stated by maria zakharova, a representative of the russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In reality, this statement is a blatant lie and manipulation, with which the russians are trying to reflect on the Ukrainian defence forces everything that the russian aggressor is actually doing – killing and torturing civilians and prisoners. Details in the article.
All the so-called ‘evidence and facts of atrocities committed by Ukrainian soldiers’ are based on disinformation created by the kremlin itself — moscow does not allow any international organisations to investigate such ‘facts’.
In addition, most of the information is recorded (i.e., fabricated) from the words of witnesses – russian civilians, russian military personnel, and collaborators. russian representatives do not provide any documentary evidence – photos, video materials, medical and expert conclusions.
At the same time, a UN report published on 1 October 2024 states that 95% of Ukrainian prisoners of war have been subjected to various forms of torture and humiliation: https://www.ohchr.org/sites/default/files/documents/countries/ukraine/2024/Ukraine-OHCHR-40th-periodic-report.pdf
Also, in May 2025, Ukrainian intelligence reported that their agency alone had recorded more than 150 cases of executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war by russians, with the total number of those executed currently standing at 245 Ukrainian army soldiers. The same applies to civilians in territories occupied by russian troops. Here is a small example from the city of mariupol.
Fakes instead of truth: how russia uses social media to hide the destruction of Mariupol.
russians are actively using social media and local influencers in occupied Mariupol to create the illusion of normal life and the restoration of the city after the destruction caused by their own bombings.
According to CNN, residents of the occupied city, including schoolchildren, are being trained in new media programmes and ‘blogger schools’ linked to russia. These influencers publish content that paints a ‘rosy picture’ of the city's recovery, while avoiding any mention of the causes of the destruction: https://www.cnn.com/2025/05/13/europe/mariupol-russian-occupation-social-media-influencers-intl-invs
Igor Solovey, head of the Ukrainian Centre for Strategic Communications and Information Security, noted that moscow is seeking to interrupt the flow of information about the terrible destruction wrought by the russian army during the capture of Mariupol. Despite active construction, satellite images, interviews with residents and videos on social media show significant destruction. Many people who lost their homes in 2022 have not yet received new housing, and the quality of new buildings often does not meet requirements.
There are also many cases where the new russian authorities are taking houses away from Ukrainians who have left the city in order to give them to others, or to the families of their military personnel. russia is therefore using influencers and social media as a propaganda tool, trying to create a positive image of the occupation and reconstruction of Mariupol, while ignoring the real problems and suffering of local residents.
According to Ukrainian intelligence estimates, during the occupation, the mortality rate in Mariupol was 300 people per week due to harsh conditions, disease and the collapse of the healthcare system. The occupying authorities, meanwhile, report an average mortality rate of 200 people per week (which is much higher than even during the peak periods of the COVID pandemic).
In addition, the total and approximate number of civilian deaths during the occupation of Mariupol in 2022 is more than 20,000 people. Moreover, the russians are now destroying the mass graves of the victims to hide their crimes.
How many war crimes has russia committed in Ukraine?
Answer: 167,000 — this is the official data only since the start of the full-scale war. Among them are 45,000 civilian casualties (excluding the occupied territories) and 625 children killed (excluding the occupied territories). The youngest child was only two days old — she died during the shelling of a maternity hospital in Zaporizhzhia.
russia systematically kidnaps Ukrainian children, changes their names, transfers them for ‘adoption’ to its citizens, and prepares them for war against their own country. These are not just crimes — this is genocide in its purest form.
"International humanitarian law exists today, but it is not being enforced. The world responds with concerns — russia with new drones and missiles, killings and torture. Impunity is fuel for a new war. If international law does not begin to punish fairly, the world will remain defenceless," says Dmytro Lubinets, Ukrainian Ombudsman.

Only increased pressure on russia can end the war and prevent the spread of russian aggression to other continents.
