"Zelenskyy has admitted to stealing US money", said Irish journalist Chay Bowes, who is a mouthpiece for Kremlin propaganda. In fact, the President of Ukraine did not confess to stealing funds. russian propaganda constantly promotes narratives of total corruption in Ukraine to reduce support from Western partners and discredit Ukraine in the eyes of the public. But right now, let's look at the real facts.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine had received over $75 billion in aid from the US, not $200 billion, as various sources have reported. This means that more than $100 billion was not transferred to Ukraine at all. And even the $75 billion did not go directly to Ukraine in full. They were partially used in the United States to create new weapons or to replace those sent to the Ukrainian army from the stockpile. In other words, the Irish pseudo-journalist Chay Bowes, who has long been blacklisted as a kremlin propagandist, wrote an outright lie.
Another fake on this topic is that Ukraine ranks first in the world in terms of corruption and last in terms of salaries.
In the Global Corruption Perceptions Index, Ukraine scored 36 points out of 100 and ranked 104th out of 180 countries. But this does not stop russians from creating fake videos and posts on social media. First, disinformation videos lack any references to the source of information. The authors of the posts do not provide any data on which ratings they refer to and where the relevant figures came from. This fact is already evidence of the unreliability of the information.
The level of perceived corruption in the world is measured by many private companies, but the most extensive rating is provided by the independent organisation Transparency International in its annual surveys. According to the results of 2023 (at the time of publication of this article, the ranking for 2024 has not yet been published), Ukraine scored 36 points out of 100 in the global Corruption Perceptions Index and ranked 104th out of 180 countries. At the same time, Ukraine showed a 3-point increase in the ranking, which is one of the best results in the world in 2023. This means that Ukraine is roughly in the middle of the ranking and is far from being named the ‘most corrupt country in the world’.
Moreover, over the past decade, Ukraine has never been ranked the worst in the corruption rankings. Overall, since 2013, Ukraine has improved its score by 11 points - from 25 to 36.
"The growth in the Corruption Perceptions Index even during the full-scale war was made possible by the active work of anti-corruption and other state agencies of Ukraine", the Transparency International study concludes.
The data on the worst salary level in Ukraine among the European Union countries is also manipulated. According to the job search service Work.ua, in 2024, the average salary in Ukraine was approximately UAH 20750 per month or EUR 5615 per year. If we look at the data of the European Commission's statistical organisation Eurostat on average salaries, Ukraine is roughly on par with Romania (€5,829 per year), while at the same time being ahead of countries such as Turkey (€5,133 per year) and Bulgaria (€4,677 per year).
