Russian propaganda is targeting Estonia on Wikipedia

In Estonia, new attempts are being recorded to alter information on the English-language version of Wikipedia regarding the country’s history and prominent Estonians, in line with russian narratives. As a result, the Estonian Government Office, together with the organisation Wikimedia Eesti, is working on a plan to protect the true history in the international online encyclopaedia.

According to MKE, the biographies of prominent Estonians list their place of birth as: “Tallinn, Estonian SSR, Soviet Union”: https://www.mke.ee/sobytiya/v-vikipedii-pytayutsya-perepisat-istoriyu-estonii/ Pages have been edited in this way for former Prime Minister and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, writer Andrus Kivirähk, singer Tõnis Mägi, world rally champion Ott Tänak and many other prominent Estonians. Articles on the history of Estonia have also been rewritten in a similar manner.
Attempts are being made to downplay the significance of the Baltic states’ independence, presenting them throughout history as part of russia and the Soviet Union. The War of Independence is being portrayed in such a way as to diminish its defensive nature on Estonia’s part and create the impression that Estonia was the aggressor. They are trying to pass off the five-pointed star as a national symbol,” the media reports.
Kaja Kallas stated that the current version on Wikipedia is cause for concern: “This shows that the battle of narratives with russia will likely never end. I am glad that the State Chancellery and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have approached this issue in a more in-depth and systematic manner.”
Wikimedia Eesti reported that most of the “edits” are likely being made by a russian-speaking user who uses several accounts (Glebushko0703 or Gigman) and has recently focused on topics related to the history of the Baltic states.
Previously, in the English-language version, he edited relatively minor topics – mostly engaging in technical editing. Recently, he has been altering information about people from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania who were born during the Soviet occupation,” said Robert Treifeldt, Chair of the Board of Wikimedia Eesti.
The article notes that Estonia has been a target of the kremlin’s propaganda machine since regaining independence, and attempts to distort history on Wikipedia have been ongoing since 2007. Such activity has been recorded, in particular, in the English, russian, Swedish and Estonian versions of the encyclopaedia. “This happens in waves,” noted Treifeldt.
Priit Talv, Head of Strategic Communications at the State Chancellery, acknowledged that technologies in the information war are also evolving, and this requires constantly keeping up with the times and developing oneself.
russian intelligence agents suspected of plotting a terrorist attack are to stand trial in Lithuania.
The public prosecutor’s office has referred the case of six foreign nationals to court. They are accused of attempting to carry out a terrorist attack in September 2024 in the city of Šiauliai: https://www.lrt.lt/en/news-in-english/19/2808132/lithuania-charges-six-suspects-with-terrorism-for-targeting-ukraine-military-aid
The target was UAB TVC Solutions, a company that manufactures equipment for the Ukrainian military. Investigators believe the sabotage was coordinated from russia and planned in the interests of the GRU. Those implicated include citizens of Spain, Colombia, Cuba, russia and Belarus.

The kremlin is establishing a network of ‘sleeper cells’ in Europe.

In particular, russian intelligence services are buying houses, warehouses and land near strategic sites in EU countries. These sites, alongside airbases, naval ports, energy infrastructure and submarine cable routes, are used for surveillance, sabotage or preparing attacks in the event of an escalation.

The Telegraph reports this, citing sources in Western intelligence: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2026/02/23/russian-spies-buy-homes-close-military-sites-europe-kremlin/
Since the start of the full-scale war against Ukraine, the number of incidents linked to russia – arson, attempted bombings and other acts of sabotage – has risen across Europe. Particular attention is drawn to property purchases by entities linked to the russian Orthodox Church. In particular, in Sweden and Norway, such properties have appeared near naval bases and radar stations, and a priest from one of the parishes received an award from russia’s foreign intelligence service.
Suspicious purchases have been recorded in the UK, France, Italy, Greece, Switzerland and other countries. Some states have already tightened restrictions on property purchases by russians, but there is as yet no Europe-wide ban, leaving room for further kremlin operations in the ‘grey zone’.
