russian media are spreading claims that ‘Zelenskyy has threatened a pre-emptive strike against Belarus’ and allegedly stated: ‘If there is a threat from the territory of Belarus or russian border regions, Ukraine is ready to take pre-emptive action’. Such reports are presented as evidence that Ukraine is “escalating the war” and “ready to attack its neighbour first”.

In reality, in his address, the President of Ukraine spoke of the need to strengthen defences in the north of the country and of Ukraine’s readiness to prevent further acts of aggression. He emphasised that Kyiv is strengthening defences in regions near the border with Belarus, which moscow is drawing ever deeper into the war.
The context of the Ukrainian President’s statement is also linked to the fact that, in 2022, Belarus had already provided its territory and infrastructure for the russian army’s attack on Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Andriy Sibiga, informed NATO allies of the ‘growing threats from Belarus’ and called for deterrent measures to prevent the expansion of aggression by moscow and Minsk, that is, to prevent an attack.

Furthermore, the Ukrainian armed forces have documented active technical and logistical support provided by the regime of the Belarusian dictator Alexandr Lukashenko to the russian army. In particular, relay stations are operating on Belarusian territory, providing navigation for russian strike drones during attacks on the northern regions of Ukraine. Furthermore, Belarus continues to supply the russian army with ammunition, fuel and maintenance services for military equipment.

Ukraine therefore has every right to take measures to neutralise any threats from Belarus, given that russia’s military aggression is ongoing (in May 2026, the russians killed the highest number of Ukrainian civilians in the last three years), and the kremlin is rejecting all proposals from mediators to end the war.

The aim of such publications by russia is to portray Ukraine as the aggressor, to divert attention from the fact that it is russia that is using Belarusian territory for the war against Ukraine, and to justify Minsk’s continued military and political involvement under the pretext of ‘protection against the Ukrainian threat’.

A Belarusian national has been arrested in France on suspicion of spying for russia.
According to Le Figaro, the man was caught on camera filming a prototype military drone on the premises of a company that works for the defence sectors of France and Ukraine: https://www.lefigaro.fr/actualite-france/haute-garonne-un-homme-incarcere-apres-l-espionnage-presume-d-une-usine-francaise-de-drones-pour-la-russie-20260619
According to the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect filmed the Delair facility near Toulouse – a manufacturer of drones supplied, in particular, for military purposes. The investigation established that, after filming, he allegedly passed the video footage to a contact in russia.
The man is charged with passing information to a foreign state. Under French law, if found guilty, he could face up to 15 years’ imprisonment.
Separately, investigators are examining a possible link between the incident and an attempted arson attack on the company two days prior to his arrest – on that occasion, unknown individuals threw Molotov cocktails, but the incendiary mixtures failed to ignite.
