President Zelenskyy, war in Ukraine, russian propaganda, Canadian broadcaster CBC
Kremlin-linked media are reporting on an interview President Zelenskyy gave to Adrienne Arsenault, a correspondent for the Canadian broadcaster CBC. The headlines are strikingly similar: "Zelenskyy admits victory over Russia is impossible" and "Victory impossible: Zelenskyy acknowledges Ukraine's dire situation." In reality, however, Zelenskyy was simply responding to the interviewer's question regarding a "win-win" scenario—an outcome beneficial to both sides — that a US presidential advisor had previously discussed.
Here is a clip from an interview the President of Ukraine gave in English:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HX8R0RhYILA
"Let’s be honest: there can be no 'win-win' situation in this war. It is impossible due to the immense loss of human life. The situation ceased to be that way from the very first day. The most important victory—not for Ukraine or Russia, but for everyone, for the whole world—is peace, an end to the war; it is a victory for the sake of human life."
Zelenskyy did not touch upon the subject of either side's chances of victory at all in this interview. However, immediately following this clip, Zelenskyy states that Ukraine will not agree to russian terms involving the handover of parts of the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions that are not currently under occupation:
"The problem is that we need to change Putin's position. He has the largest territory in the world, yet he wants... I don't know... a few more kilometers. And for what? That is the question. That is why it is very strange to hear from some partners that he supposedly only needs this part of Ukraine, only these kilometers—and that's it. No, that idea is madness. No, he doesn't need kilometers. He needs Ukraine. He needs Ukraine to become part of Russia."
Clearly, this means that Ukraine is prepared to continue defending its territory and its people by all means necessary, including on the battlefield. His words simply do not align with the notion that Zelenskyy supposedly acknowledges a dire situation and the impossibility of victory.
In reality, starting in June 2026, the Ukrainian army began actively reclaiming occupied territories in the east (by mid-September, Ukrainians had liberated more territory than they had lost since the beginning of the year). Furthermore, long-range strikes have disabled 51% of russia's oil refining capacity, significantly curtailing putin's financial ability to sustain military operations. Overall, Ukraine’s active defense continues despite all challenges and US "neutrality," as the Trump administration blocks or delays any military aid—including missile defense systems—to Ukraine, as well as additional sanctions against the kremlin. It is precisely this that prevents Ukrainians from defeating the aggressor, not any weakness on their part.
